If you like PHP that's fine. But I don't think it's a good choice for anything other then websites, just a personal opinion.
Otherwise python has been being used for system scripting and such for as long as it's been around. It's not as substantial as Perl, but there are a lot of software and code floating around for all sorts of things for Python.
Python is going to be included by default by most major distributions. It's just already used by a lot of stuff. Everything from websites, games, system scripts, and GUI/command line applications.
