Perhaps you should see the Python homepage for more info on Python, such as: PythonVsPhp. You will find many well written libraries that cover a huge spectrum that can be used in Python in both stand-alone packages and web-based applications. Plus there are the web-programming frameworks like Turbogears, Zope...

Python was released in 1991 compared to 1995 for PHP.

Well that stuff and python does not have the horrid security track record that php has...

If you like PHP that's fine. But I don't think it's a good choice for anything other then websites, just a personal opinion.

Otherwise python has been being used for system scripting and such for as long as it's been around. It's not as substantial as Perl, but there are a lot of software and code floating around for all sorts of things for Python.

Python is going to be included by default by most major distributions. It's just already used by a lot of stuff. Everything from websites, games, system scripts, and GUI/command line applications.
