If you use emacs in a tty, and you use a not too old terminal emulator, then set TERM to xter-256color for much better syntax highlighting in that configuration.

I'm a fairly new emacs user, and this is one of the best tips I've seen (besides how to activate syntax highlighting in the first place, which is on by default in 22.1). Thanks!
