CUPS is fine.

It's the support in Gnome or KDE (and other such applications) that sucks.

If printing in OS X is easy and printing in Linux is hard, then it's the applications in Linux that such and not the CUPS service.

since, you know, both OSes use the same CUPS software.

Actually I've run into more problems with CUPS in OS X than in KDE. Though that's
because Mac people are more willing to install random binary "printer driver" software
from the printer CD.

And I absolutely hated CUPS until I started using it through KDE's print system.
