---------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    NLUUG Spring Conference 2007
                             10 May 2007
                             De Reehorst
                         Ede (The Netherlands)

                           CALL FOR PAPERS

                            Virtualization

UNIX systems are often deployed as servers. Security and maintainability concerns thus often lead
to the use of single-purpose servers -- every service gets its own machine. However, this approach
faces some limitations, because many servers are scarcely used. Consolidation of servers presents
an effective manner to reduce costs.

One approach that is growing in popularity, is the virtual (not physical) separation of servers,
with the assistance of new virtualization techniques. Fast new networking technologies enable
quick migration of virtual machines from one physical platform to another, often without even
interrupting their execution. Hardware/software virtualization are also useful for other purposes,
like setting up test environments, running Windows software on *NIX systems, etc..

Virtualization is also found in Linux GSM telephones, which often have one processor that drives
the radio and another processor which runs applications. Virtualization plus one processor is an
alternative that can help reduce costs.

The program committee is seeking contributions from speakers with both positive and negative
experiences with virtualization. What kind of problems have you encountered? What were the
solutions? We would like to see both technical contributions and user-oriented anecdotal talks.
Possible topics are:

- Setting up chroot and jail environments
- Virtualization with Wine/SoftPC/Xen/Bochs/OpenVZ/Xenomai/VMWare/...
- SELinux / AppArmor
- How Virtualization techniques work
- Pros and cons of (para)virtualization
- VM migration across a network
- Clustering (virtualization, the other way around)
- Strategies and tools for VM deployment
- Strategies and tools for VM backup
- etc.

This conference provides the opportunity for presentations and a limited number of tutorials. In a
presentation, the author has approx. 40 minutes to present his or her subject to the general
public. In a tutorial, tools, techniques, or languages can be demonstrated in max. 3 hours to a
select audience. We encourage everyone with an interesting tutorial or presentation topic to send
an abstract before December 31, for evaluation by the program committee. Abstracts can only be sent
via the web interface:
http://www.nluug.nl/cgi-bin/vj2007-abstract-en

The selected speakers will be expected to submit a paper for publication in the conference
proceedings before March 11, 2007. After the 2007 Spring Conference ends, these papers will be also
published on the NLUUG website.

While Dutch is the primary language of the conference, English-language presentations and tutorials
are also welcome.

Important dates:
31 December 2006 - deadline for abstracts
11 January 2007 - notification of speakers
11 March 2007 - deadline for accepted papers

Questions about the conference and suggestions for speakers should be emailed to
pc-nj2007@nluug.nl.
