As for Debian not being in a position to point fingers, that isn't really true. When a new "stable" Debian release comes out, it really is quite stable; better than a typical x.0 RedHat release. As such, according to my criteria, it's not so bad for them to quickly drop support from an earlier "stable" release.

Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me that Debian Potato is still supported (for security updates), even though it was released in August 2000 (2 1/2 years ago) and the next release, Woody, was released last July. So it's not that bad.
