I've never found a convincing, complete statement about the legal status of mplayer.

Some say the problems are just patent problems, others say they include binary blobs from MS, etc. etc.

One of the problems MPlayer had was code without copyright notices. This was fixed some time ago.

As for binary blobs, I guess you're thinking of the binary code package which is not needed unless you want support for some Real codecs and some other formats.
