HP offers Debian Linux support (ZDNet)

ZDNet reports that HP will be offering a support package for Debian. "Debian won't be on the same level as Red Hat or Novell, though... HP won't market it, and customers will have to download the software on their own. Software combinations with partners such as BEA Systems or Oracle won't be available with Debian. And HP won't formally certify Debian for its servers."

Finally, it was always frustrating to have to download a free trial RH version to be able to tell HP dudes that the problem you were facing was not Debian specific. Also their support lines are heavily Internet Explorer oriented. Another wishlist is to release soon their proprietary kernel modules (cciss extensions, ..), so that they can be brought into shape. :)

Nice move.

My former employer recently purchased two HP Itanium servers. They requested the Microsoft OS without asking first, so we had to load RHEL ourselves. This involved downloading all of the standard Red Hat Enterprise Linux ISOs, but also required a special "system" ISO to use for repartitioning (and for elilo stuff, I think; I didn't actually do the install). While HP only officially supported Red Hat and Novell/SUSE at the time, this special system CD was Debian GNU/Linux!
