CLI Magic: Feh for image viewing (Linux.com)
Too many Linux image viewers are tinged with little annoyances -- they take too long to load, are slow to redraw the display, have limited format support, sport inconvenient controls -- so when you want to settle on one, inevitably there's something to make you utter feh! in general discontent. Good call -- feh is the name of a speedy little viewer that packs in a surprising number of features for its size."

Of course, I can manually scale the image, but that gets tedious, having to stop the slideshow to make adjustments everytime an image exceeds the screen size. It kind of defeats the pupose of having a slideshow.
That's what the "-t" option does in qiv. Does anyone know how to do this with feh.

Debian even has a patch to fix the last problem, but the code authors haven't merged it.
Absolutely, if qiv were just updated a bit, it would rule.

qiv also uses left-click + drag to scroll the image, but only if you invoke it with the -f option.

Now I mostly use gqview, it is slower but it fits my needs better.

Well, maybe it's missing or maybe I just haven't figured it out. Generally, I prefer the image to be displayed full size, unless it is larger than the screen, in which case, I would like the image to be scaled down to fit. That's done automatically in fullscreen mode, but the image is surrounded by black so the unused portion of the screen is hidden. What I would like to do is have an option that scales the image in just such a way while in slide show mode, so I can view the entire image and still use other applications.Missing feature?

I totally agree. I just wish somebody would update it to gtk2! qiv and xmms are the only two applications on my computer that require gtk 1.2.CLI Magic: Feh for image viewing (Linux.com)
And it's the only app I use that still needs the old gdk-imlib11 and it doesn't set root background images properly so that fluxbox can have pseudotransparency.CLI Magic: Feh for image viewing (Linux.com)
In my experience, qiv is the only image viewer that can quickly display a large image. Other programs either take 30 seconds or more to display the image, or they crash.qiv
I just did a mini test on the following file:qiv
qiv took about 15 seconds to start up and cover the screen with the
image.
no available method to scroll the image with qiv.
I seriously doubt those timings have anything at all to do with the speed of the respective graphics programs. qiv will display a 4875x1860 image for me in a small fraction of a second (<200msec).qiv
My computer is quite slow by modern standards. Nonetheless, I assure you qiv
that feh is approximately 4 times faster for decoding PNG across the
board. I agree that qiv is so fast that it often does not matter, and
that it is much faster than most viewing programs.
I have used pho (http://www.shallowsky.com/software/pho/) a lot, it is the only viewer I know that supports fast annotations to quickly sort images. pho
I've always liked GQview. It has an image comparison utility that allows you to weed out duplicate images from a given selection of files. One downside is that it seems to take a long time to load thumbnails, though I typically am viewing larger (digicam) files through it.CLI Magic: Feh for image viewing (Linux.com)
I've been using xv for ages. I'm on the road right now, can't try feh or qiv, how does xv compare to them? What about xv?
I would compare them in the following way. qiv and feh are much faster, What about xv?
and have better features for viewing large images pleasantly. They have
many many fewer features overall, which I consider another advantage to
them, not xv. They are also free software.
