Debian users may be OK if they install the unofficial packages at ftp://ftp.nerim.net/debian-marillat/. The acroread package installs acroread itself, while acroread-plugins installs the javascript functionality. You can enable/disable the javascript feature just by installing/uninstalling the acroread-plugin.
