Galaxy remakes Sun's server strategy (News.com)
Sun for years shunned the x86 servers in favor of machines running its own Solaris version of Unix and its own UltraSparc processors. But the server market growth has been with x86 systems running Windows and Linux, and Sun is working hard to make up lost time."

What's the world coming to? ;-)
Seriously, with all these nice Opteron boxes running Solaris (or Linux) less people will want to buy more expensive (and more OS limited) low end Sparc boxes. Meaning, the Sparc volume will go down even further. How will Sun be able to continue developing this processor line when the costs per unit are going to be even higher? It's not like those things will end up in XBox, PS3 and Nintendo...
Time to fold?

And, apparently, a "friendship" with Red Hat is on the cards:Red Hat, Sparc and a bit of poker
<IMHO>Red Hat, Sparc and a bit of poker
If better designed Alpha died, it's only fair that SPARC dies too. One option for Sun would be to make an Intel compatible processor, a "better Opteron" or "better Itanium" with a SPARC compatible mode.
</IMHO>
