Top Story
----------------------------------------
New Mandriva Club site online!

The Mandriva Club has been undergoing an extensive redesign, and the
new version of the site is now in place for all Club members to use.
The new site is based on the XWiki system and we have placed an
emphasis on making it easily open to changes and additions from you,
the Club members. The new design and the more reliable basis will
make it easier for you to navigate and also help us provide even more
great features and content for you. Have a look at the new site today,
and don't forget to try out all the new features, including the
community areas and the new Knowledge Base, which can be edited and
added to by all members! Other new features include a blogging system
for Club members which is already proving very popular - see what your
fellow Club members have to say! If you're not a member of the Club
yet, you can sign up today to get access to all the great features
available to Club members - including access to commercial versions
of the distribution, early access to new releases, and the Club RPM
farm which provides updated packages for Club members. You can join
as a Silver member for just $12 per month!

Mandriva News
----------------------------------------
Domain Names Changed

Following the company's recent change of name, all our domain names
have been changed over to the new system. The old domain names have
been transferred to their new owner already, so you will no longer be
able to use them to access Mandriva. Please remember to update all
your bookmarks and so on! In general, you simply have to replace
'mandrake' in the old domain name with 'mandriva' to get the new one,
so www.mandrake.com becomes www.mandriva.com , www.mandrakelinux.com
becomes www.mandrivalinux.com , www.mandrakeclub.com becomes
www.mandrivaclub.com and so forth.

Please note that this change affects several functions in the
distribution. In particular, rpmdrake (which includes MandrivaUpdate)
gets its mirror list from a remote server whose domain has been
changed. We have issued an update for rpmdrake so it will now look at
the correct location for the mirror list, but if you have an older
version, you may find you can no longer retrieve a list of update
servers. If you have a working update media you can simply install
the available update to rpmdrake and all will be well. If you do not
have a working update media, due to the inability to retrieve a list,
you will have to set one up manually before you can retrieve the
upgrade. Club members can use the Club mirror generator script here
to generate a command to add an update media for your version of
Mandriva. Non-members can find a similar tool here. Once you have
succeeded in setting up an update media, you should be able to
install the rpmdrake update via MandrivaUpdate.

Another important affected feature is the homepage set on all
browsers by default, which links to several Mandriva websites. This
is contained in the indexhtml package. There is now an updated
version of the indexhtml package available via MandrivaUpdate (or
MandrakeUpdate) for all currently supported versions of the
distribution, so make sure to update! If you have a blog or are
involved in any related discussion groups, mailing lists or other
such areas, please (if you can!) help us spread the word about the
change so people are still able to access Mandriva's websites.

Mandriva Linux 2006 Beta 2 released

Hot on the heels of beta 1, beta 2 of the next Mandriva release is now
available for download. Several important bugs from the first beta
were fixed, and some new features added. The new theme for 2006 is
now included and KDE users will find the Kat desktop search tool
available on their panel by default. There have also been some
important changes to the wireless networking configuration system
which should allow for easier control of networking from the desktop,
so make sure to test the new beta today! You can find download sites
here.

New Mandriva websites under development

Our current company websites - www.mandriva.com and
www.mandrivalinux.com - have been around for a while and are starting
to show their age. However, never fear, for we have an updated version
of our major pages under development. The two sites will be unified
under an appealing, usable new design which will give comprehensive
access to information on the company and our products for both home
and business users. The new site is quite far along in development
and we plan soon to allow Club members an early look at the new sites
to help us with their feedback, so if you're a Club member, look out
for an announcement!

Tutored online training courses available

As part of our new eTraining initiative, we have started running
tutored Linux training courses. The first courses are underway
already and cover OpenOffice.org Writer and Linux System
Administration. The courses are directed by an expert Mandriva tutor
and the format encourages students to work together through
collaborative tools like a dedicated forum and wiki. You can find
more information about eTraining here, and you can sign up for the
eTraining mailing list and receive information on all future courses
in advance by clicking here. This is a great opportunity to improve
your Linux skills with Mandriva's help! As a benefit for our valued
Club members, they will receive a discount of 15% (for Standard
members) or 20% (for Silver and above members) on these tutored
courses.

Along with the tutored courses, the eTraining site also offers
several self-taught courses, some provided by Mandriva and some
contributed by our community members. Club members get free access to
all these courses. If you'd like to benefit from the discounts but are
not yet a member of the Club, sign up today!

Mandriva in the news
----------------------------------------
Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 server setup article

Mandriva is featured in this article about how to set up Limited
Edition 2005 as a web, mail, DNS and FTP server. If you want to use
Mandriva to run a server but aren't sure how to go about it, go ahead
and read up! However, we would suggest you simply use urpmi or
rpmdrake to install the required software rather than installing apt
as the article suggests. If any of the software mentioned is not on
your installation CDs, you can use the Club mirror generator or Easy
URPMI to add an urpmi 'main' media, after which rpmdrake or urpmi
should be able to find all the tools mentioned.

Mandriva 2006 beta 2 reviewed

TuxMachines are on the ball; a mere day after Mandriva 2006 beta 2 was
released, they had a review available! It has a good round up of the
new features in 2006 and beta 2, so check it out if you're not sure
whether you want to test the newest release or not.

Mandriva Security
----------------------------------------
Update, update, update

As illustrated by our top story this week, Mandriva official updates
do more than just keep your system secure; they keep it functional as
well. One of the new updates since the last newsletter was the
correction of the mirror list URL in rpmdrake, which is needed to
make sure rpmdrake and MandrivaUpdate are still able to check the
list of update mirrors. So even if you think your system is secure,
make sure you update regularly! If it's just too much trouble,
remember that Mandriva Online makes updating easier than ever. Other
recent updates include important packages like gaim and cups.
