OpenSolaris is out

Sun has followed through and made the first OpenSolaris source distribution available. It can be gotten from the download page. Do read the release notes before you start grabbing things, though.

Best quote ever, in the bottom of the page: "Our lawyer is making us say that OpenSolaris is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc."

The download page says:
Some binary components are covered under the OpenSolaris Binary License and some are covered under other open source licenses.

I am not a lawyer, but it sure looks like the OpenSolaris Binary License is not another open source license. It is a pretty darn closed license for stuff without source.

* IPFilter from Darren Reed is included in OpenSolaris. I'm still wondering how the licensing scheme is working with the CDDL.

* It seems that you still need the Sun proprietary compiler to compile it. It seems they are planning to release files to make it compile in GCC.

* You still need a proprietary license to get the binary build of OpenSolaris. That's strange, is the express version more than a simple build ?

* Grub is in the source solaris tarball ;-). I'm still wondering why they don't make the CDDL compatible with the GPL.
