Not to mention the fact that, well, Linux may be great, but monoculture is a bad thing; the BSDs promote diversity in the free Unix world, and (by using different methods and ideas) help ensure that free software doesn't put all of its eggs in one basket.
So, I may not use BSDish systems much, but I'm glad they're there, and I do think they're worthy of occasional coverage here.

While I'd get upset if LWN starts covering every little BSD spat
(there's an entertaining one going on right now between Mr de Raadt and a
few FreeBSD devs), the major announcements are important, and should be
covered here.

I'm pretty sure they announced this last week, too.FreeBSD Unveils FreeBSD 5.4
Um, we don't? I may be primarily a Linux user, but I do appreciate FreeBSD (as well as NetBSD, OpenBSD, and the other forks) for their own contributions to free/open software, and to the state of the art in general. OpenBSD, in particular, has produced some very nice tools, such as OpenSSH, which have become essential infrastructure. I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but...
Further, even if you don't use a BSD at all (and I do), things like OpenBSD's campaign to get free,
architecture independent wireless drivers ultimately benefit all of
us, not just OpenBSD users.
I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but...
;-) Winky smiley. User just made a flirtatious and/or sarcastic remark. More of a "don't hit me for what I just said" smiley.I know I shouldn't feed the troll, but...
