It would appear that this patent (if it is valid, which is doubtful, given prior art in VMS) could be worked around, if Wine really needs it; maybe Eben Moglen's people can give some advice to the GCC developers about how to do it. But Wine may face any number of patent threats from Microsoft, as they are cloning Windows, and MS has patented everything they can think of.
