OK so then he tried using a Mozilla browser, with cookies enabled, only to be told he couldn't use a Linux machine either. So then he tried Opera on a Windows PC. Still no good."

I had a similar problem with my bank here in the US. The solution was to convince Mozilla to lie to their server by adding the following line to the user.js file: user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win 9x 4.90; en-US; m18) Gecko/20001108 Netscape6/6.0"); This should all be on one line and it will convince the other side that user_pref("general.useragent.override", "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE5.5; Windows 98;"); to convince it that you are using IE 5.5 on Winblows 98. This works from Mozilla 1.2b and 0.9.9 (or what ever Mandrake installs) on a Mandrake 8.2 system. The problem that this creates is that webmasters will now think that even fewer people are using Moz (or its derivatives) on Linux. Regards,

I did send the html attachment to the address posted along with several This proves that the world does belong to M$. Extend and embrace.
Those evil bastards. Why must they force microsoft products on everyone? My college does the same thing with their website, it wont work properly with mozilla even with cookies enabled, so i e-mailed their webmaster and asked what they would do about it.. their reply was " just use internet explorer ". so i laghed and submitted to their evil demands, i had no choice. Those evil bastards!

you are using Netscape 6. An alternative that should also work is:

Do you really want to post your Credit Details on an IIS server anyhow???Scottish Power disconnects Linux users (Register)
The problem, of course, is that given IE's dozen outstanding remote root compromises, forcing users to use insecure software creates a non-ignorable amount of liability on the part of the ISP. It's one thing if they choose to use something unsafe, but if they're forced to, the legalities change.

It would be nice to see this principle tested... however, I think existing (in the US and possibly EU) disablity/accessibilty legislation would be a better one to go for....

Konqueror allows you to change the User Agent of the browser to trick web pages into thinking you are using IE on Windows.
Scottish Power disconnects Linux users (Register)
The problem with the useragent adjustment in both Konqueror and Mozilla (yes, Mozilla has an addon that makes it as easy to change as with Konqueror) is that it ONLY sets the HTTP header Useragent string. It doesn't adjust the value returned by the scripted versions. Thus, many sites that REALLY want to detect UA, simply require scripting, and use that function. The easy way around this is to use a personal proxy that both sets (or deletes) the UA header, AND reworks scripts using that functionality to return an arbitrary working value. Often, such scripts are entirely client-side anyway, so no values are returned to the server. The idea is that the proxy simply replaces any scripted calls to determine browser type and version with stub functions returning True/OK, so the script continues as desired. (The potential problem with that is that sitemasters may still draw the wrong conclusions about browser types, based on the URLs fetched, if their unmodified scripts only fetch those URLs from certain browsers. However, that's at least a further level of indirection.)Konqueror (and Mozilla) useragent adjustment.
It is a little ironic that Scottish Power owns the oldest UK 'dial-up' ISP, which is also one of the most multi-platform friendly.

Geez, that's bad. Microsoft doesn't even do that. I got a pretty good idea how it happened though. Someone told the HMFIC (guy in charge) that only 'EVIL HACKERS' user linux, therefore, for security reasons, it should be blocked. I have seen this very thing happen, just not to this extent.Scottish Power disconnects Linux users (Register)

it requires non-M$ users to jump through several hoops, *then* declines to
give us the web page. It sniffs out all the browsers details and then asks

comments. Two days later, I received a reply and some type of legal agreement
that requires me to keep the email secret between the two of us. I didn't
realize I would enter into some type of one sided agreement upon receipt of
an email! So I won't post the email here because it would be illegal and I
would be forced to go to jail, in a foreign country--again. . :)
