Why a Linux 7.x release now?

I think it is that oss pdf reader development is starting to make big time headway, and they want to get back in the market before they're left behind. This is the year of the desktop :-P.

The main thing is copy/paste for text, but evince's rendering, search interface, and etc., are beautiful. It, for the first time ever, makes reading PDFs a pleasure. It probably uses some of the same backend as Kpdf, I guess. What if Kpdf and Evince are ported to windows and Scribus effectively catches up with or surpasses the pay-for acrobat version? Hmmmm
