As I understand it, Blizzard games are mostly peer-to-peer. Battle.net and bnetd are more like match-making services than anything else (certainly they're not like dedicated Quake servers). At least, I think this was the case several years ago.

Still, working on a libre competitor to Blizzard's games sounds like a very good idea to me.
