The Xorg fork and productive era that followed could perhaps also be called the "Keith Packard unleashed" era. (Course, Keith Packard had been working prolifically on X and XFree86 well before then too, since the 80s). It was the "ejection" of Keith from XFree86 that led to the X.org fork.
