Launchpad mailing lists going away

Canonical's Launchpad software-collaboration platform that is used for Ubuntu development will be shutting down its hosted mailing lists at the end of October. The announcement recommends Discourse or Launchpad Answers as alternatives. Ubuntu's mailing lists are unaffected by the change.

Discourse

I never really knew what Discourse was, so went to their site to check it out, and OMG. I've seen that thing before on multiple other sites, but to me that doesn't look like a proper replacement for mailing lists, it looks more like some self made PHP forum from the early 2000s. Is there anything I'm missing?

It has functioning mailing list mode IIRC (as in, receive and reply to messages entirely through mail).

It's funny you make the PHP forum comparison because Discourse is pretty alien to those (except for Vanilla, which was pretty close to it in spirit). The phpBB et al grognards will probably grumble at it.

I have found Discourse to be quite usable if I disable Javascript. Much more so than with Javascript enabled. That was a pleasant surprise.

Usually Discourse just doesn't show up at all with Javascript disabled so I assume that is the mode you are referring to?

Is Ubuntu still a community distro this day ?
It always seem like Canonical is calling all the shot.

Was it ever? Only Universe repository was allowed to be touched by community.

That's a ridiculous claim. Canonical is happy to have community contributors for Ubuntu.

As with any large project, proposed changes need to be in line with the vision of the maintainers. For instance, you couldn't show up and then immediately propose switching the default Ubuntu Desktop text editor from gnome-text-editor to kate and expect that your change would be accepted.

It's part of presale preparation for Microsoft.
