I wonder if (or can) the following pattern be parallelized. Does (GNU) make execute the three subshells serially?

FOOFLAGS := $(shell pkg-config —cflags foo)
BARFLAGS := $(shell pkg-config —cflags bar)
BAZFLAGS := $(shell pkg-config —cflags baz)

Default:
cc $(FOOFLAGS) $(BARFLAGS) $(BAZFLAGS)…

No. Only targets can be built in parallel.
