A coach put it a lot more bluntly to us, manipulation is when you want others to do something and do not care if there is something in there for them (zero-sum win/lose mentality), leadership is when you care enough to make sure everyone wins something in the end (even if others may find the solution unbalanced).

Manipulation by incentive is just manipulation if the incentive does not materialize, it only works once, engineers have better memories than pigs.

Negociation/manipulation

A leader looks for the "win win". If you can be honest about what you want, and think clearly about what the other person wants (it's far too easy to project *your* motivation on *them* and reward them with something *you* find valuable), then negotiation should be easy.

If you can't see clearly, amd offer them something they find worthless, then you're not going to get very far.

Cheers,
Wol
