I would like to see more participant, but you cannot force people voting if they disagree. Personnaly I voted for this election, as well as I vote for any elections in my country (France).

Does anybody here actually understand the results? I see a big bunch of numbers resulting somehow in a winner. However the seem to be no explaination whatsoever what these numbers actually mean.

The Debian voting procedure is defined in the project constitution.
And you can easily find more information on Concordet-style voting methods.

Debian is a modern democratic system. In our free countries figures of voters are quite similar.Branden Robinson is the 2005 Debian Project leader

Looks to me like the turnout is slightly down, and the absoluteslight decline in turnout, slight increase in # votes

number of voters is up a bit. Too bad tabs don't work here:
2005 504 964 52.3% Branden Robinson
2004 482 908 53.1% Martin Michlmayr
2003 488 831 58.7% Martin Michlmayr
2002 475 939 50.6% Bdale Garbee
2001 311 Ben Collins
2000 216 347 62.2% Wichert Akkerman
1999 208 347 59.9% Wichert Akkerman
The official results include a nice graph of the option matrix which I find easier to understand than the beat matrix.

Actually, yes. Basically, everything you need to understand the result of this election is to see that every number in the third row of the given matrix is larger than the corresponding number in the third column. This means that, for every other candidate, Branden was preferred to them by more voters than preferred the other candidate to Branden. But things could get more complicated.
