NVIDIA/Mellanox has been running an in-house training program for new kernel devs for a fairly long time. Most of their work will show in drivers/net. Several "graduates" have taken that and gone on to interesting carreers, I think it is pretty successful.

Consider your options:
a) Submit a driver proper: 1 commit in the Hall-of-Fame (after taking into account 450 review comments),
b) Submit a driver through staging: 1 commit to get it merged, 450 commits in the Hall-of-Fame to clean it up, 1 commit to move it out of staging (iff those 450 cleanups were sufficient).
