Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) is the LTS-style "channel" as they call it - which appears to be kind of, but not exactly, the same as the Android release channel. They both follow the same schedule and basic numbering scheme as each other, in that 68.4.0 was released on Jan 7th (same day as Firefox 72.0), but non-Android releases are versioned as "68.4.0esr", whereas the Android release is just "68.4.0" (no "esr").

No, I don't know why that is.

It's a shame, because I really like Fennec and really don't like Fenix so far. I'll have to give my options a long look at some point.

One thing that I may have missed is the fact that the Android version of Firefox is stuck at version 68 (supposedly, a LTS version?)... AFAIR, they didn't mention any change in policy regarding this, but others may know better here...

The site https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/android/notes/ still lists 68.4.1 as the version for Android. These improvements in privacy would be especially helpful in a mobile environment.
