The UN is more like a meeting place for nations. Where justice is realised would be the International Criminal Court. Of course China is not a State Party. But then, neither is Israel. And neither is the U.S. of A.
It would be remiss of me to let your initial comment (though worthy of Slashdot, I felt it was not quite up to LWN standards) go without pointing out the following. If one were to mention flagrant human rights abuses and breaches of freedoms whenever articles concerning Israel or the U.S. came up on LWN we would get very little geek stuff talked about. _Similarly_ perhaps we should withhold from reaching for the Tiananmen stick everytime we see the word China in print. They are trampling upon the Constitution and the rights of american citizens in order to do so. Rolling over them with tanks would be more obvious and honest. Instead, they claim to be protecting them while strangling them, taking their wealth, borrowing against the wealth of future generations, sending their jobs overseas, and handing them over to the dictates of foreign authorities.
In the same way, the most public proponent of "justice" - the U.N. - is presiding over some of the worst injustices and praising the principal perpetrators of attrocities for their actions.
Wed, 14 Apr 2004 14:21:17 +0000 A Linux standards conference in China https://lwn.net/Articles/80329/ https://lwn.net/Articles/80329/ janpla Yes, we could all learn something about that, couldn't we? Israeli tanks crushing foreign protesters, American and British soldiers massacering civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, like they have done before in Vietnam, Korea, Japan, etc etc.
I can't think of one single country in the world where you can't find gross injustice going on, not one government that doesn't in some way allow such things to happen while they look the other way. The best we can hope for, as things are, is that a government is taking active steps to actually improve things; and in that respect China is far ahead of many 'democratic' nations, USA not least.
Wed, 14 Apr 2004 08:11:28 +0000 A Linux standards conference in China https://lwn.net/Articles/80230/ https://lwn.net/Articles/80230/ QuisUtDeus The Chinese seem to like Linux and free software. Let's all hope the government there discovers how to apply freedom to their people - or at least stop rolling over them with tanks. Tue, 13 Apr 2004 14:52:53 +0000
