So why then, when you actually LOOK at things, do you discover that commercial interests so often lead to evil results? There's a reason for the saying "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".

Unfortunately, fixing this is very difficult, much of the problem is that the marketing side rarely really understands the product. The "low fat" market is a classic example - the science behind it has been debunked, but it's a massive money generator. Salesmen are paid more than factory floor, selling is rewarded, and as long as the people in charge don't understand the science nothing will change.

Unfortunately, politicians who understand Science are few and far between.

Now you're dodging your original question by reformulating it as "what's wrong with Internet ad economy which isn't wrong with ad economy per se?".

I don't see the problem with misleading Internet ads. They are no different from regular ads that can also be misleading.

On the other hand, targeted ads helped me to find quite a few interesting products that I'd have missed otherwise.

One wrong feedback path: misleading people leads to financial gain.

Unfortunately, this bug seems very hard to fix. Perhaps the whole app needs a thorough redesign.

Local Government services when they use tech should prioritize public interests over commercial profit interests doesn't seem like an "evil ideology" to me. Can you explain further what you mean?

The ad economy doesn't need a rethink, it's killing the earth and must be destroyed.

Mozilla can spout all the vapid silicon valley platitudes and spin-doctoring they want, but the fact remains they're complicit in this evil industry.

Show us some backbone, like WebKit's doing.
