Yeah, I agree, it was quite nasty. Kernel 4.17.7 is now released to Fedora stable.

This nasty bug, which is triggered during high I/O (such as rsyncing to an external drive) bit me hard. Until I got a brief bit of log output that was spat out to the console I thought it was a hardware problem and acted accordingly. If you are running one of these kernels I'd highly recommend upgrading. 4.7.17 and 4.7.18 are functionally identical if you are x86_64. I verified that the vanilla kernel fixes the bug and look forward to the official fedora release of 4.7.1[78].
