You can answer this by querying google with something like

and seeing whose username comes up, if any (a lot of the lowest numbers return no results, maybe they never posted comments). Greg Kroah-Hartman is #8, Jonathan Corbet is #1, etc.

Personally, I thought at the time that you and Liz were nuts to give up senior sysadmin jobs at a great place to work to start a consulting business. Over the years it has been nice to see you prove me wrong. I read LWN semi-regularly (don't always have time to keep up every week), and I do it because it is the most useful technical site I know of, not just because it was started by and still run by people who are my personal friends. I thought you were letting yourselves in for a world of stress, trying to make it as a startup. But after 20 more years of being a senior sysadmin in charge of services that must run 24x7x365, I'm not sure your route has really been any more stressful than mine, and you have arguably accomplished a lot more in terms of having a lasting impact.

Now I move to retirement soon (where I hope not to be just trading work stress for money stress), but LWN will still be there and I will still be reading it. Congratulations on all that you have accomplished.

Little did I know in 1993 when I first started using Linux that I'd have to wait five years before I could start reading LWN.

The wait was totally worth it, though. LWN has few peers and no superiors.

It has been my pleasure to be here with you for all this time. Really. And I am sure I am not the only one. There are so few things maintained over decades that one never reconsiders ; but coming back to this URL is so undebatable. Impressive really.

Just stop counting in years please : you are going to make us all feel older than needed.
Two is a good number. Decade is as good a unit as any other. No?

I suspect that the lack of a like or upvote capability may actually contribute to the quality of comments on LWN.

Likes train people to post for the rush of having X upvotes. On LWN your post has to stand for itself, relying on sheer numbers of supporters is harder. Voicing your opinion is a (small) committment here, not a mere button click.

Congratulations to the LWN crew! I hope your search for new writers goes well. Some of you will want to retire in the coming 20 years.

I still remember the horrible sinking feeling when the LWN shutdown article was posted. LWN was already irreplaceable: it was hard to imagine how any mortal could track what was going on without it.

I wonder if this is the longest any site has kept going after saying it would shut down? It must be getting on for that record. :)

Thanks for 20 years of great articles, and for being a hub for a great community. I've been a subscriber for 15 years, and I've recommended others subscribe (and given out gift subscriptions) for as long as I can remember. LWN.net is truly a unique resource. I hope people realize just how much useful content there is in your archives, especially in the kernel index page. The majority of that material is still useful today.

LWN.net has been my go-to site for my own talks on the Status of Embedded Linux, so every penny I've spent has been worth it, and I feel like I've been riding your coattails for years. Thanks for all the great material, and for your sense of humor. Keep up the great work!

LWN was a huge reason for me to get my first credit card so I could finally subscribe. That was ages ago and I'm still glad I did.

My only wish is that there were publications adhering to LWN's standards covering other topics. Well, one may dream...

Wow. I started reading on and off in 1998, and in 1999 started recommending at SuSE US for our staff to read LWN at least cursorily as their source to track what was going on in the Linux world. It was just head and shoulders in clarity and thoroughness above other sources in explaining the top topics that came up over time.

Sadly I don't think the people who really needed to read it did, but that's another story.

Besides the shutdown announcement, the saddest day for me was when you decided to close the "Desktop" column. Hope someday you make it come back.

All that aside, the quality of this site is astounding.

So congratulations to continue your amazing work depending on a seemingly broken business model for over 15 years! Looking forward to many more.

Time and experience show that subscriptions are about the only way of funding a specialty site like LWN reliably. Ads may work for a very high volume site, though the amount the big ad networks are skimming off makes that option seem less and less viable, but they don't work for a site with fewer but more dedicated readers. Beyond that, though, I think LWN has found a great balance between subscriber exclusivity, which gives people a reason to subscribe, and free distribution, which draws in new subscribers. I find I like the mix of free and subscriber-only content much better than the "limited number of free views per month" paywalls found on so many newspaper sites.
