Mate, this is a 10 year old article. You said "1.2.4", but bombono's latest is 1.2.2. You said ubuntu, then linked to OpenSuse. You said 20.04, but it's not included.

Everything okay over there?

If it gets multilingual subtitle support I can maybe stop going to the mac in order to make DVD's. That would me nice. :-)

Looks quite similar, I like it. DVD Studio Pro is easy to use, although it has all of those hard/special features.

I'll remember to try this one next time I have to author a DVD.

Multiple angles are not very common, and certainly not for (what I assume was) their original purpose. However, I have a few DVD:s where the opening and ending credits have different languages as different camera angles, since there's way too much text to fit in a subtitle track, and a few others where the alternate camera angle is the storyboards, as a bonus feature.

I dont see it as the role of DVDAuthor to ever replace the GUI frontends.

So that's kind of a "marketing essential" then. Lacking either doesn't make the disc invalid. For homebrew discs, like Bombono targets the creation of, the list of essential features is pretty small. That's all that phrase means.

I thought this might be a relevant place to mention that, after about a three-year hiatus, DVDAuthor has resumed active development. This is the common open-source authoring engine used by every single one of these open-source GUI frontends. It already did most of what you wanted to do, albeit modulo various irritating bugs and limitations and the like.

With Scott Smiths blessing, I have taken over as principal developer. I have already done loads of bug fixes, incorporation of long-standing useful patch submissions, and other enhancements. I see it as the goal of DVDAuthor to support every publicly-known feature of the DVD-Video spec.

Essentialness depends on where you expect the DVD to be seen. I haven't yet seen multiple angles, but just about every commercial DVD release I have ever seen has had multiple audio and subtitle tracks, so that copies can be sold in several countries.

Concentrating on one aspect of the problem and interfacing well with tools which handle the other aspects has proven to be a good way of getting somewhere with non-commercial free software. Not saying that there aren't projects which get by well without that strategy, but I think that if more people did that the ecosystem would be even richer.

Thanks for the review LWN, I'm looking forward to testing Bombono out tonight.

I am asked to burn DVDs all the time from my HD home video and DVD authoring hasn't always been the smoothest process on Linux. Up until now I was not aware of the Bombono project but have used all the other software mentioned in the article. I like the notion of pre-processing the video with another tool first as I use WinFF and Handbrake all the time anyway.
