You said "1.2.4", but bombono's latest is 1.2.2. You said ubuntu, then linked to OpenSuse. However, I have a few DVD:s where the opening and ending credits have different languages as different camera angles, since there's way too much text to fit in a subtitle track, and a few others where the alternate camera angle is the storyboards, as a bonus feature.

Sat, 22 May 2010 09:30:59 +0000 DVDAuthor Lives Again https://lwn.net/Articles/388784/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388784/ ldo
I don’t see it as the role of DVDAuthor to ever replace the GUI frontends.

To paraphrase Alan Kay, they are there to make the easy things easy, I am here to make the complex things possible. :)

Sat, 22 May 2010 06:53:34 +0000 DVDAuthor Lives Again https://lwn.net/Articles/388775/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388775/ hackerb9
Hurrah! So are you going to focus on making DVDAuthor a better backend for the other tools or are you working on making the frontends unnecessary?

Sat, 22 May 2010 04:05:51 +0000 Building DVD discs with Bombono https://lwn.net/Articles/388751/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388751/ n8willis
So that's kind of a "marketing essential" then. Lacking either doesn't make the disc invalid. For homebrew discs, like Bombono targets the creation of, the list of essential features is pretty small. That's all that phrase means.

Nate

Fri, 21 May 2010 18:44:34 +0000 DVDAuthor Lives Again https://lwn.net/Articles/388659/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388659/ ldo
I thought this might be a relevant place to mention that, after about a three-year hiatus, DVDAuthor has resumed active development. This is the common open-source authoring engine used by every single one of these open-source GUI frontends. It already did most of what you wanted to do, albeit modulo various irritating bugs and limitations and the like.

With Scott Smith’s blessing, I have taken over as principal developer. I have already done loads of bug fixes, incorporation of long-standing useful patch submissions, and other enhancements. I see it as the goal of DVDAuthor to support every publicly-known feature of the DVD-Video spec.

Lawrence D’Oliveiro

Fri, 21 May 2010 03:20:21 +0000 Building DVD discs with Bombono https://lwn.net/Articles/388448/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388448/ eru DVDs can support a lot of non-essential features (such as alternate audio tracks, animated menus, multiple subtitles,
Essentialness depends on where you expect the DVD to be seen. I haven't yet seen multiple angles, but just about every commercial DVD release I have ever seen has had multiple audio and subtitle tracks, so that copies can be sold in several countries. Not saying that there aren't projects which get by well without that strategy, but I think that if more people did that the ecosystem would be even richer.

Wed, 19 May 2010 19:30:43 +0000 Building DVD discs with Bombono https://lwn.net/Articles/388262/ https://lwn.net/Articles/388262/ BaldHeadedGeek
Thanks for the review LWN, I'm looking forward to testing Bombono out tonight.

I am asked to burn DVDs all the time from my HD home video and DVD authoring hasn't always been the smoothest process on Linux. Up until now I was not aware of the Bombono project but have used all the other software mentioned in the article. I like the notion of pre-processing the video with another tool first as I use WinFF and Handbrake all the time anyway.

Wed, 19 May 2010 16:04:24 +0000
