First thing to realize is the issue isn't about flags. Remove them and you will quickly find that the same intolerant folk are right back demanding you change the displayed place names for the same global hotspots. So there are two paths and one leads to madness:

1. What flag flies on poles in a geographic area and what do the current inhabitants call it? Display that. To any who object simply tell them that the list simply reflects the reality on the ground and if they have a problem with that go change reality and submit a bug report to get the software updated to reflect that change. Ensure zero exceptions get in because if ONE exception is made the arguments will never end, see below.

2. Open Pandora's box, importing every long running political conflict on our sad little planet into software development mailing lists. Most of the usual suspects have been going on for decades and show little sign of being resolved anytime soon. No solution based on a political decision can hope to end the flamefests.

I guess the Fedora devels are going to find out that a lot of the problems that plague Debian discussions are not going to be unique to Debian...

Well, this tells me that they (FESCo) are willing to at least give this topic further consideration and discussion.

Somehow I don't think that discussion will be very pretty.
