Apart from that name in the menu you hardly even notice. The programs work just like they should. And yes, the games look better. I have seen quite some newbies and Kubuntu-users being amazed at how polished and functional this desktop is. So what is your real problem with some KDE 4 programs being shipped on a KDE 3 desktop?

Fri, 30 May 2008 07:10:14 +0000 Thesis on openSUSE Published https://lwn.net/Articles/284423/ https://lwn.net/Articles/284423/ petegn

Hummmmmmmmm have you tried installing just KDE 3.5.X you cant do it there are parts of KDE4 it insists on installing just look thru the KDE 3.X menu after install you will see xxxblahbalh(KDE4) and i am not willing to put up with that if i say KDE 3.X. then i want absolutley NO KDE 4 at all I have said all this on the Suse lists plus more and am sick of the condesending attitude of some of the replies from staffers at that .

Thu, 29 May 2008 18:45:14 +0000 Thesis on openSUSE Published https://lwn.net/Articles/284399/ https://lwn.net/Articles/284399/ apokryphos

It's curious that you would decide to not use a distribution because it contains something that you disagree with, but that you wouldn't use, is it not? I mean, I don't like Xfce much, but that hardly means I'd want to stop using openSUSE because they ship it. If you want KDE 3.5.x, then openSUSE still ships the most polished, most stable, and most mature version of it, with guaranteed immediate updates whenever the latest stable version of that is available. It is also just as easily installable as KDE 4 is from the DVD. As you said, some people love and want to use only KDE 4, and some do not -- again, it's great that openSUSE gives users that choice.

Thu, 29 May 2008 17:09:04 +0000 Thesis on openSUSE Published https://lwn.net/Articles/284350/ https://lwn.net/Articles/284350/ petegn

Well you will loose users have no fear KDE4 is NOT ready for anything other than extended Beta testing at best it should NOT feature in a release untill it can at minimum match KDE 3.5.9 for useability and available programs . At the end of the day we all have our own views on this i am one of a small but growing number of people that have seen KDE 4 is no way suitable for a release as yet . I have as a result chosen another distro that does not use KDE 4 yet and when it does it will be READY FOR GENERAL USE it is NOT at the moment and will not be by the release date for Opensuse 11.0 and even that is still not ready for classification as a full release maybe after a few more runs as beta it may get there . You love KDE 4 i think it sucks big time Se Lavie

Thu, 29 May 2008 16:02:23 +0000 Thesis on openSUSE Published https://lwn.net/Articles/284287/ https://lwn.net/Articles/284287/ apokryphos

Sorry, I don't think you have any idea of what's going on at openSUSE if you think there are some high above non-community people forcing KDE4 for anyone. It was a decision made by the openSUSE KDE team, all of who are KDE developers themselves; no conspiracy waiting for you here. KDE 3 is still fully supported, and it's a desktop option for people during installation time (using the DVD), just like KDE4 is too; so I'm not sure exactly what you're really complaining about. There is anything but a consensus in the community that KDE4 should not be shipped -- actually, it's the exact opposite: most people agree that it needs to be done (including myself).

Thu, 29 May 2008 09:29:08 +0000 Thesis on openSUSE Published https://lwn.net/Articles/284222/ https://lwn.net/Articles/284222/ petegn

The major problem with this system right now is that Opensuse is SUPPOSED to be a Community thing but the input that is ever taken notice of is that from within the suse internal team Example no way on this planet is KDE4 ready for use in a Distro but certain people within suse are hell bent on forcing KDE4 on people and whats more failing to mark it as at best beta quality software that has almost NO management tools that actually work the new Dolphin system crashes continually and is sp crippled it is un able to do simple things like Drag&Drop in fact anything that Konqueror takes in its stride when told of this all you get is outright sarcasm from certain people within there are a lot of other issues as well the Opensuse release cycle is too fast more time needs to be spent in early Alpha stages to eliminate more bugs from the eventual release which would make the final release a better prospect for all especially the first timers that at the moment are going to take one look at Opensuse 11.0 and say if that is Linux i want nothing to do with it . I now no longer install suse on my machines and have switched to Bluewhite 64 Linux until suse gets it's self sorted out

Wed, 28 May 2008 22:28:11 +0000
