SuSE is alone at the top of the short list, for many reasons.
They give meticulous attention to detail, and have a very conservative approach to kernel engineering.
Things that are loose ends, or just broken in red hat are nicely polished and working perfectly in SuSE.
I've also had servers that wouldn't take a red hat install, or wouldn't run red hat reliably, but have been rock solid ever since installing SuSE.
hmm, why am I still running red hat? I suppose the inertia of installed base, and the fact that I've been able to find workarounds for all issues so far. But if I had it to do over again, I might well start with SuSE.
