Fedora 41 released [LWN.net]

Fedora Linux 41 has been released. See the "what's new" pages for Fedora Workstation and Fedora KDE, to learn more about the latest in those editions. There is also a new Fedora Miracle Window Manager Spin that offers the Miracle tiling window manager for Wayland.

Note that the ChangeSet page is a list of proposed/accepted changes for a release, and not necessarily 100% what actually went into a release. (Though, it looks like most of these did make it in, this time around.)

I still have the Wayland switch in front of me...

So the sway spin has been on my list for a while (without really following it). Has it been discontinued? What is the difference between sway and Miracle?

As an i3 user I understood with sway not much would be different for the "naive" user.

Yes, in youger days I played a lot with window managers and what not. Nowadays I prefer to just use the defaults of the distro, so they should widely match what I can live with...

sway works fine for me, I can barely tell it apart from my i3 setup I had. One problem is it doesn't work on Nvidia cards

I've been running the atomic sway spin for a few months. It works just fine for me — although I was never an i3 user. I was on XMonad for a long time before I decided to make the switch to Wayland. Because of that I did have to re-write my config basically from scratch, but it turns out that my sway config can do nearly everything my XMonad config was able to do.

No, it's still around and supported, and while I'm not using a spin (because weird setup on my side) I've been very happy with sway for many years, including the last couple of years using it on fedora :)

Right, now it's listed on https://fedoraproject.org/spins . I'd claim it wasn't this morning: Either not all spins are published at the same moment or I need new glasses...

When I did not see it on the list I made a web search and found https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Fedora_Sway_Spin Maybe it's only the wiki page that is outdated.

Now I have Sway and Miracle to choose between. Both claim i3-compatibility. Miracle is based on Mir. Which does not tell me anything. Except that 10+ years Mir was supposed to be competitor to Wayland, but things have changed for a long time.

I made the upgrade yesterday and many of the software has not been starting until I looked on internet and put the following like into
my /etc/enviroment:

DRI_PRIME=1

Seems this solved the error "Error 71 (Protocol error) dispatching to Wayland display."

I wish this could be better anounced somewhere.

Lots of programs have not started by default.

It’s an nvidia driver issue, fixed in the latest driver beta release.
