** Engineering and Development Updates

** Software Bill-of-Materials documents are now available for CPython
------------------------------------------------------------
CPython 3.12.2 is the first release to include Software Bill-of-Materials documents
(https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-3122/) (SBOM) generated for source releases. The
SBOM documents use the SPDX standard and meet the NTIA Minimum Elements for SBOM. You can read the
user documentation for CPython SBOM documents (https://python.org/download/sbom) to get started.



** Welcome, Serhiy & Petr!
------------------------------------------------------------
We were very excited to welcome Petr Viktorin as the Deputy Developer in Residence and Serhiy
Storchaka as the Supporting Developer in Residence
(https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2024/01/announcing-deputy-de...) in January 2024. This
transforms the residency program into a full-blown team! While every team member is expected to
prioritize unblocking other contributors and keeping the developer experience smooth, with three
people on the team, each Resident can now also spend a percentage of their time on feature work.
It’s exciting to be able to begin to realize the full vision of the Developers in Residence
program, with special thanks to Bloomberg for making it possible for us to bring Petr on board.
Unexpectedly, a generous anonymous donation allowed us to hire Serhiy as well. Thank you!



** PyPI Security Efforts
------------------------------------------------------------
Over 150 malicious packages found on PyPI have been reported since January 1st 2024. PyPI has added
support for logged-in users to report malware
(https://blog.pypi.org/posts/2024-03-06-malware-reporting-...) via web form, lowering the
barrier to reporting a suspicious package. It’s being used successfully, helping the Python
ecosystem be safer. PyPI also has introduced a preview API for submitting these reports, which some
researchers have already adopted and are submitting reports successfully, speeding up
administrative review and remediation.

There’s a private preview
(https://discuss.python.org/t/pypi-malware-observation-rep...) for
the outcome of these reports launched recently, in hopes of working with the security community on
how to best support the huge volume of Python users worldwide in taking further actions to secure
their systems.

PyPI now requires Two-factor authentication (2FA) (https://pypi.org/help/#twofa) for all users.
We'll be continuing to improve the security of PyPI, and we're always looking for help. If you're

** PSF Board

** New Membership Committee
------------------------------------------------------------
The PSF Board has created a new Membership Committee
(https://www.python.org/psf/records/board/minutes/2023-11-15/) with the goal of dedicating time and
attention to improving the experience of the PSF’s membership.

To that end, it will provide a defined Board point of contact for Membership-related issues and
assist the Board in its oversight responsibilities relating to Membership, e.g., defining
membership categories or the elections process. The Membership Committee will also make
recommendations to the Board on policy or bylaws changes relating to membership. Check out the new

Grants Program
------------------------------------------------------------
We are happy to announce the introduction of PSF Grants Program Office Hours
(https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2024/02/introducing-psf-gran...) ! The Office Hours
are a text-only chat-based hour hosted on the Python Software Foundation Discord
(https://discord.gg/7rthGF3BBe) by PSF Staff from 1-2 PM UTC (9 AM Eastern) on the third Tuesday of
the month. We invite the Python community to join in and receive support for Grant-related
questions and inquiries! If you have urgent or immediate questions about the Grants Program, please
email grants@pyfound.org.

As part of a larger effort to ensure the PSF Grants Program is responsive, transparent, and more
approachable, the PSF contracted Carol Willing to perform a retrospective on the DjangoCon Africa
grant process. In the retrospective Willing contextualizes the PSF Grants Program as part of the
work of a non-profit with a charitable mission, incorporating research on best practices and

** PSF Board Election

The PSF Board Election is fast approaching, with election cycle dates to be announced in May. We
welcome our community members to consider self-nomination and to encourage folks who would be a
good fit for the Board to self-nominate. Nominating others is okay, just check in with them first!

PyCascades 2024 (https://2024.pycascades.com/) is back in Seattle and online, April 5-8th, 2024, at
the University of Washington's Kane Hall. Founded in 2018, PyCascades is a regional PyCon in the
Pacific Northwest, celebrating the West Coast Python developer and user community. Tickets are

** PyLadies
------------------------------------------------------------
We’re excited to share that the first ever Outstanding PyLady Awards
(https://pyladies.com/blog/Announcing-The-Outstanding-PyLa...) will be
announced at PyCon US 2024. The 12th PyLadies Charity Auction
(https://us.pycon.org/2024/events/pyladies-auction/) will be held at PyCon US 2024 on May 18th.
Proceeds from the auction support PyCon US travel grants and worldwide PyLadies activities. We’re
also hosting the annual PyLadies Luncheon (https://us.pycon.org/2024/events/pyladies-lunch/) on the

** North Bay Python
------------------------------------------------------------
North Bay Python (https://2024.northbaypython.org/) is back in Petaluma, California, June 29-30,
2024, at the Reis River Ranch. North Bay Python is a weekend conference for professionals,
enthusiasts, and students using the Python programming language. The CfP for this one-track

** PyOhio
------------------------------------------------------------
The 17th annual PyOhio (https://www.pyohio.org/2024/) will be held July 27-28, 2024, in Cleveland,
Ohio. Founded in 2008, PyOhio is a free annual Python programming language community conference.
The organizing team welcomes you to submit your proposals to the CfP

and is intended to be relevant to all types of Python users!

** New Open Initiative for Cybersecurity Standards
------------------------------------------------------------
The Python Software Foundation is pleased to announce our participation

new Open Initiative for Cybersecurity Standards
(https://eclipse-foundation.blog/2024/04/02/open-source-community-cra-compliance/) collaboration
with the Apache Software Foundation (https://www.apache.org/) , the Eclipse Foundation
(https://www.eclipse.org/) , other code-hosting open source foundations, SMEs, industry players,
and researchers. This collaboration is focused on meeting the real challenges of cybersecurity in
the open source ecosystem, and demonstrating full cooperation with and supporting the
implementation of the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). If you’d like to stay up to

** Announcing a PyPI Support Specialist

PyPI has grown enormously in the last 20+ years, and in recent years it has reached a truly massive
scale with growth only continuing upward. In 2022 alone, PyPI saw a 57% growth and as of this
writing, there are over half a million packages on PyPI (https://pypi.org/) . We are very happy to
share the news that we are hiring a person

the increased capacity and allow us to keep pace with PyPI’s seemingly unstoppable growth. This is

** 2023 End of Year Fundraiser
------------------------------------------------------------
We are starting off the year feeling energized and supported, thanks to each of you who shared or
donated to our year-end fundraiser and membership drive. With over 150 individual donations, new
Supporting Memberships, and JetBrains’ (https://www.jetbrains.com/) generous partnership ($43,000-
more than double last year!), we raised $134,175 in total for our work supporting Python and the
Python community! All in all, during the period of the fundraiser, we raised close to $200K, which
includes donations from our sponsors (https://www.python.org/psf/sponsors/) , donations to our
Fiscal Sponsorees (https://www.python.org/psf/fiscal-sponsorees/) , Membership
(https://www.python.org/psf/membership/) renewals, and proceeds from the special replay of our
