> Red Hat offers certification programs and partner programs that allow vendors to certify their app vs. specific versions and architectures for RHEL. So if you go through that and certify your expensive, crufty and proprietary software on RHEL 8.1 and follow Red Hat's compatibility guidelines, Red Hat will certify it for major releases of that application.

The aim of this certification program, BTW, is to make sure ISVs understand what can be reasonably expected to stay stable (as in no ABI changes) for the whole lifetime of a RHEL release, and help them avoid depending on something that can not be set in stone this long. And I suppose every once in a while Red Hat has to eat crow and accept a large number of vendors are making the same mistake and there is a need to bend backwards to set in stone something no dev in its right mind would want to stabilize this long in the first place (that’s one source of the “what were they thinking” horror reaction people unused to enterprise distributions experience when they are first exposed to RHEL & their competitors).
