I really don't think it's that unreasonable to want to be able to detach a hard drive from one computer and be able to attach it to another. Portability of filesystems, especially good ones, across different OSs is really helpful.

Yes, saying "welp, sucks to be them" is an option, but I like to believe we're adults here and can at least discuss the possibility. The GPL-supremacy and Sun/Oracle-Hate fuelled comments above are very disappointing.

Oracle, the company that attempted to assert that reimplementation of APIs was copyright infringement? I think it's pretty legitimate for the free software community to have negative feelings towards Oracle.

GPL license doesn't prevent portability and nothing is stopping any BSD based system from making it available for their OS. Many of them ship with Linux compatibility layers to aid with this.

Many BSD proponents won't even accept that GPL and AGPL are free and open source licenses and insist that only permissive licenses are truly free, so this goes both ways. Sun and Oracle aren't the same thing in this context. The licensing decisions for OpenSolaris were exclusively done by Sun (and several Sun people readily acknowledge that the engineers there were GPL hostile). However independent of all of this, Oracle's history towards other open source projects (Java lawsuit, silently canceling OpenSolaris, Hudson governance etc) has enough there to explain the hostility.

Not sure if there's much Sun hatred. FWIW, I loved working at Sun, it was a great great company.
