Well, that's hysteria, plain and simple. Nobody will think you're friends with him because you maintain a piece of tech. Just rename it if it bothers you so much, the GPL allows for renaming projects as long as you keep the license and copyright notices.

It's not what others think. It's what I think.

Suppose I find an intractable ext4 bug, no biggie I ask Theodore Ts’o. A problem with reiserfs, well, I can conceivably ask Mr. Reiser sometime next year, but I kindof doubt he's even been able to look at that code during the time he was imprisoned.

Also, the world has moved on, give me a reason why anybody would want to start using reiserfs today, instead of btrfs or ext4 or xfs or …

There's a different between "not wanting to be associated" with someone and not being able to ask them for help with technical stuff. You can get acquaintance with code without Reiser, even if it's harder. Besides, I don't need to give you a reason to start using reiserfs because I don't think anyone should, it might have been pretty advanced at the time, but its glory years have passed. That doesn't change the fact that "oooohhhh its author is a murderer we shouldn't use/maintain it" is a piss poor argument.

Asking Mr. Reiser to fix bugs in reiserfs, regardless of the reality of the situation, is a bit like bothering Mr. Young to fix bugs in ssleay.
