Sven Guckes RIP

Longtime FOSS contributor and advocate Sven Guckes has died at 55. A Twitter posting and news article (both in German) describe the Berlin-based Guckes as someone who was always ready to help users get the most out of their systems on Usenet and IRC. His home page and a Hacker News posting have more information as well. RIP. (Thanks to Martin Michlmayr.)

That's bad news...

Just pre-covid, we had our last phone call. I remember him someone who took his time to teach, who always had one more idea to solve a problem. More than once I had my sleeping bag in his living room, getting up with a cat visiting you early in the morning. Also, he knew Berlin very well and thus he also was an awesome guide showing you the city and its history.

Good memories. I miss you, Sven!

Ah ah you were also woken up by the cat! Memories, I stayed on his floor when the CCC was organized in Berlin in 2005 and 2006, stayed till New Year fireworks.

I'll miss Sven, as a long term member of the Free Software community and an great advocate for command line tools, who helped me a lot with Vim, mutt, giving me city tours, or helping me and others to get to Free Software events and connect with other people. Wrote down some memories in English.

Sven would have been proud to know that Bram Moolenaar will dedicate the Vim 9.0 release to him.
