Thanks for this. I use bc all the time for quick and dirty calculations. I did not know about eqn (I suppose tex/latex supplanted it completely) or the Writer's Workbench. And the bit about typo-finding is brilliant. Pioneering work and the ideas will survive even if some of the software hasn't.

I can't say I've ever used eqn, however I know that in Debian GNU/Linux a version of eqn comes with the groff typesetting system used to typeset manual pages. So it may well be that eqn is more widely distributed than TeX/LaTeX even today.
