This is configurable as a KDE-wide setting. By default, KDE (3.x)
separates selection ("the Unix way" of selected text copying, normally
accessed using the middle mouse button, as you obviously know but others
reading may not) from clipboard ("the MSWormOS way" to copy/paste,
normally accessed using the keyboard or menu or toolbar button). KDE uses
separate buffers for each of these by default, while KDE 1 and 2 used a
merged buffer, such that the last thing selected/cut/copied using either
method was pasted using either method.
As mentioned, separate buffers are the default in KDE 3.x, but this is
configurable from klipper, the KDE clipboard and selection manager, which
also BTW keeps a stack of the last used items available, from which one
can select the active entry, if the last used entry isn't what you want to
Pop up klipper's menu (C-A-v by default, rebound to C-S-v here, or click
on the klipper tray icon), select Configure Klipper (c, from menu), and on
the General tab, configure your Clipboard/Selection Behavior as desired.
Here, I continue to keep separate buffers, as I find that useful on
occasion, allowing me access to two SEPARATE active paste objects, one via
mouse middle-click, the other via keyboard, but I make use of klipper's
active paste pointer (which if specifically selected sets both buffers to
the same value) to set both equal if so desired, just as I often use it to
copy multiple values in one document/application, then paste them as
appropriate into another.
