Another area where ham radio enthusiasts are important is helping organise outdoor events such as adventure races, ultramarathons, orienteering and rogaining. These events often go far into the wilderness where there is no permanent conventional radio connectivity. Hams provide updates from aid stations for those monitoring the progress of participants, and can call in medical aid if needed.

The hams get to practise their hobby while helping others practise theirs.
