The Rust language gets a foundation

The newly formed Rust Foundation has announced its existence. "Today, on behalf of the Rust Core team, I’m excited to announce the Rust Foundation, a new independent non-profit organization to steward the Rust programming language and ecosystem, with a unique focus on supporting the set of maintainers that govern and develop the project. The Rust Foundation will hold its first board meeting tomorrow, February 9th, at 4pm CT. The board of directors is composed of 5 directors from our Founding member companies, AWS, Huawei, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla, as well as 5 directors from project leadership, 2 representing the Core Team, as well as 3 project areas: Reliability, Quality, and Collaboration." Mozilla has transferred its trademarks and domains for Rust over to the foundation.

I'm surprised to see Huawei in the list. Will the foundation's operation be affected by US sanction?

Weren't the sanctions only on the sale of semiconductors and chips? I believe leading a foundation is not affected by the current sanction schema.

Huawei shall be well behaved: for example, it shall not force the Chinese Communist Party's views upon the foundation, like Beijing's claim on Taiwan, etc.

It covers software as well, or at least Google reckons it does,[1] and so far as Huawei's business model (making Android phones) is concerned, that's really the only party whose interpretation is relevant. They are now selling phones without Google apps.[2]

How this applies to Rust: I have no idea. You would have to ask an export lawyer.

Great news that this excellent project has managed to abandon the sinking good ship Mozilla... I wonder which one will be next?

Microsoft joined the foundation. It seems that Microsoft keeps using rust to develop their products.

Can we stop with the "Mozilla is a sinking ship" comments? Usage-wise it's not in Chrome or Safari territory but it beats the others, including all Microsoft browsers. A 3.65% marketshare still translates to tens of millions of users. Innovation-wise, especially in security and privacy, it's beating all the others and keeping them honest. Compatibility-wise, I see no issues in recent firefox versions, except a few cases that can be attributed to user-agent sniffing (Microsoft Teams).

Rust outgrew Mozilla, that's about all.

Agreed. The sensationalism about the "downfall" of Mozilla is somewhat counterproductive. It's been a rough stretch for the organization to be sure, but I'm still hopeful and I think Firefox still offers the best browsing experience by a good margin.

Nobody is questioning firefox.

Everybody is questioning the management of the company that keeps doing weird choices.

Please note they were talking about Mozilla (i.e. the foundation) and you are talking about Firefox (the browser). I have no particular beef, but don't talk past each other.
