Elastic promises "open"—delivers proprietary

Particulars aside, this sort of thing is gonna keep happening as long as the structural reality persists that "open source is not a business model" as the article says and it's hard to get businesses to spend money on something that they can get for free. But complex software require significant upfront investment and it's hard to find that outside of big companies or VCs...
One idea to fix that is this idea of "cloud funding"? -- https://www.onecommons.org/cloudfunding -- a non-compulsory mechanism to share some of the revenue spent on cloud services with the open source projects they depend on. I hope it works!
