Mutt 2.0 released [LWN.net]

Version 2.0 of the Mutt email client is out. "This release was bumped to 2.0, not because of the magnitude of features (which is actually smaller than past releases), but because of a few changes that are backward incompatible". New features include a cd command to change directories, automatic IMAP reconnection, and "MuttLisp", a Lisp-like language for the configuration file. See the release notes for details.

And why not?

Mutt's motto is

"All mail clients suck. This one just sucks less."

but I think they are modest. Mutt is the only email client I've used that I think rises to the level of "good". It's still the only one I use out of choice.

I usually refrain from “me too” comments… but, yeah, Mutt is awesome. I cannot imagine participating in various mailing-list with different UI.

I started using Mutt in 1998 or even earlier on a university Irix system & have continued to use it on my desktop machines (all Linux) since 2000.
GUIs have their uses, but most of the time they simply add distracting noise to the basic message, whether e-mail clients, discussion forums or file managers.

It's hard to imagine I've been using Mutt for nearly twenty years. It's wonderful software, even if I use a fraction of its full potential.

How does Mutt 2.0 relate to Neomutt?

They are two seperate projects. neomutt is a fork of mutt, and while there is some cross pollination between the two projects, the code bases have started to diverge more and more over time.

I began using 'neomutt' because it had the sidebar patch merged; I think it is now also available in vanilla Mutt. Their "What have you achieved, so far?" FAQ says: "Lots of old Mutt patches have been brought up-to-date, tidied and documented."
