Toward a "modern" Emacs

As one who has grown used to emacs over the years, it has nevertheless been a source of ongoing astonishment to me that it not yet become "modern" enough to update its dired-mode buffers when an actual update (new files, new modification times) has occurred in the directory being viewed. It sometimes realizes that it has happened, it is even helpful enough (in a manner of speaking) to alert you by prompting with "Directory has changed on disk, type g to update dired", and typing "g" is now wired into my muscle memory.

This seems a really quaint limitation in this day and age. But who knows, maybe version 28 will succeed in fixing even this.

It might even succeed in dragging it kicking and screaming into the 1990's, when the CUA90 shortcut key standards (copy=ctrl-C etc) were introduced.
