FreeNAS is coming to Linux

The FreeNAS distribution implements network-attached storage on top of the ZFS filesystem; it was reviewed here back in 2015. FreeNAS has always been based on FreeBSD, but now iXsystems, the company behind this system, has announced a new version, called TrueNAS SCALE, that will be based on Debian. "Linux is a key requirement to achieve some of the SCALE project goals". More information about those goals will evidently be forthcoming in the future.

FreeNAS is coming to Linux

After reading their notice, I went to OpenZFS website, and saw that indeed Linux is the platform where ZFS development is most advanced, so no surprise they move from BSD to Linux.

There is a OpenZFS Feature Matrix spreadsheet where this can be checked, and according to it, FreeBSD lags behind in several of features and Linux is the most up to date.

Or so it seems.

AFAIK that OpenZFS feature matrix is outdated. From what I could gather, the OpenZFS development was switched to the ZFSonLinux tree, with most of the OpenZFS stakeholders rebasing their features on top of that tree and trying to create a new common codebase.

As a happy FreeNAS user, I'm excited to see a Debian-based FreeNAS solution (not for ideological reasons). Running VMs on FreeNAS is not really fun right now (try a non-US keyboard when connecting via VNC) and boot times could be slightly faster. Having Debian underneath might fix those itches automatically, while hopefully preserving the ease-of-use of FreeNAS.
