openSUSE votes not to change its name [LWN.net]

The openSUSE project has been considering a name change as part of its move into a separate foundation since (at least) June. A long and somewhat controversial vote of project members has just come to an end, and the result is conclusive: 225-42 against the name change.

The problem iirc was that they voted to change the name, without putting forward any candidate names. So it was like, "Do you want to drop openSUSE for some unknown future name?"

Usually it's easier to get people to agree to some unspecified change than it is a specific one, it permits people to have their fantasy.
Having a longtime history with SuSE and OpenSuSE the case made for a name change benefit appeared weak and unconvincing; the proposed new names were also rather uninspiring; so I'm glad that the vote was so decisive against diddling for vague non-technical reasons :)
