It seems like the cause of complaint is the fixed 3 hour delay before hibernating. Given that Fedora runs the full udev/upower/whatever stack of clever code, couldn't that just learn the battery discharge curve and then set an alarm to do the hibernation when it's down to 5 minutes remaining? For most people it'll go back to the normal behaviour, while providing an actually useful safety net, plus people would be able to associate “no blinking standby light” with “time to plug in”.

That behaviour would be amazing, I'd even be ready to pay the penalty of waking up the laptop once in a while, checking the battery status and re-suspending..

For reference, I had a mac that behaved this way. It was pretty irritating.

When I went to work in the morning, the laptop would invariably be 5 minutes from auto-shutdown, and suspended too, eating up 2 of those 5 minutes to do the launch from disk. I couldn't even check email during the commute.

Obviously this could be mitigated with configuration, but I'm not sure it would make most people happy.

Thats a pretty good idea actually, if workable.
