Fedora reawakens the hibernation debate

A nice thing about save and restore though is that it does not have to be supported by every little thing to be useful. It is enough if the tools you use most often support it well enough, where doing auto-save and remembering which documents were open may be well enough in many cases (as a bonus the code paths can be shared with crash restore). And it is much more of a stable equilibrium: with hibernation countless small problems can make the whole thing useless, whereas problems with save and restore are more likely to only loose a little bit of state. The downside is that it needs fast boot times to be most useful.
